Life in the UK Mock Test

Free practice tests for the real Life in the UK test — the exam required for most indefinite leave to remain (settlement) and citizenship applications. 10 practice tests, 240 original questions in total — each test has 24 questions, a 45-minute timer, and needs 18 correct (75%) to pass, matching the real test's own format.

Test format last verified: 2026-07-04 against gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. These are original practice questions we've written on general UK history, government, law and culture topics — not the real test questions, and not copied from any study guide or question book.

About the real Life in the UK test

The Life in the UK test is a computer-based exam most people need to pass before applying for indefinite leave to remain (settlement) or British citizenship. It's separate from your main application — you book and sit it yourself, in advance, at a registered test centre.

How many questions are in the real test, and how long do I get?
24 questions, with 45 minutes to answer them all — verified against gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test on 2026-07-04.
    What's the pass mark?
You need 18 correct answers out of 24 — 75%. Our mock tests use the same 24-question, 18-to-pass format so your practice score means something.
How much does the real test cost, and what if I fail?
The real test costs £50 per attempt, booked online at lifeintheuktest.gov.uk. You can retake it as many times as you need, but you pay the £50 fee again each time — which is exactly why practising first, for free, is worth doing.
Is this the same as the real test?
No. These are original questions we've written ourselves, covering the same broad topics (UK history, government, law and culture) as the official Life in the UK: A guide for new residents handbook — they are not the real test's actual question bank, and we can't guarantee they match its exact difficulty or coverage. Treat a good score here as a sign you're on the right track, not a guarantee you'll pass on the day.
Do I have to take it for ILR and citizenship?
Most applicants aged 18–64 do, for both settlement and citizenship applications, unless you qualify for an exemption (for example, being under 18, 65 or over, having a qualifying long-term health condition, or having already passed it for an earlier application). See our ILR step-by-step guide for where it fits into the wider application.
