"Permitted absence" excludes a trip from the 180-day count entirely — only tick this if it matches one of the excepted reasons in Appendix Continuous Residence (CR 3.4), e.g. a life-threatening illness of you or a close family member, or assisting with a national/international humanitarian crisis.
